AC Fitting

Choosing and fitting an AC in a house requires careful consideration of several factors. The correct approach ensures effective cooling and energy efficiency.

Choosing the Right AC

Start by selecting the right type and size of AC for your space.

Types of ACs

  • Split AC: This is a popular option for cooling individual rooms. It consists of two main units: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. Split ACs are known for being quiet and efficient.
  • Central AC: Ideal for cooling an entire house. A central AC system uses ductwork to distribute cool air from a single unit.
  • Window AC: A single, compact unit that fits into a window frame. They are best for cooling a single room and are generally the most affordable option.
  • Portable AC: A self-contained unit on wheels that you can move from room to room. It exhausts hot air through a hose that is vented out a window.

Sizing the AC

The size of an AC unit is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). To determine the right size, you must calculate the area of the room or house you want to cool. A unit that is too small won’t cool effectively, while a unit that is too large will cycle on and off too frequently, leading to poor humidity control and reduced efficiency.

Fitting the AC

Once you have the right AC, you can begin the installation process.

Split AC Installation

  • Indoor Unit: Place the indoor unit on a wall, away from direct sunlight, and with enough space around it for proper airflow. The unit should be mounted level to ensure efficient drainage.
  • Outdoor Unit: Position the outdoor unit on a solid, level surface outdoors. Make sure it has enough clearance around it for ventilation and is not exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Refrigerant Lines and Wiring: Connect the indoor and outdoor units with refrigerant lines and electrical wiring. This is a critical step and should ideally be done by a professional.
  • Vacuuming: A vacuum pump is used to remove all moisture and non-condensable gases from the refrigerant lines. This is a crucial step for the longevity and efficiency of the AC.
  • Final Checks: After installation, check for leaks and ensure the AC is running properly.

Central AC Installation

Central AC installation is a complex process that involves installing a single outdoor unit and an indoor air handler unit, as well as a network of ducts throughout the house. This is a job that requires a professional HVAC technician.

Window AC Installation

  • Mounting: Place the window AC unit securely in the window frame. Ensure it is tilted slightly outwards to allow for water drainage.
  • Sealing: Use foam or other sealing materials to fill any gaps around the unit. This prevents air leaks and improves cooling efficiency.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance is key to the long life and efficient operation of your AC. Regularly clean or replace filters, and have the AC unit serviced annually by a professional.
